Brian Smith
On leaving school, Brian worked in S H Benson Ltd, then one of the largest advertising agencies in the country. A short break occurred for Army life where he was posted to the Royal Corps of Signals' cipher division (cracking codes a la Bletchley Park), working hand in hand with the Intelligence Corps, close to the Russian border.

He started a London marketing and advertising agency, Mills Smith & Partners, during which time the company grew to £14m turnover and in the early 1980’s, together with his colleague Sir Keith Mills, were instrumental in the invention and launch of the Air Miles concept. The development of the Air Miles idea considerably challenged the resources of Mills Smith & Partners. Fortunately, NatWest thought the idea a world beater. His company eventually pitched the concept to Lord King, then Chairman of British Airways. The rest as they say - is history.

Brian now runs two companies: Escalator Marketing specialist in strategic planning and assists SME’s in developing their marketing platform. The Umbrella Partnership comprises of Berkshire based companies in membership, each of which offer the highest levels of individual specialist marketing expertise.

Brian sits as a governor on the board of The History of Advertising Trust, the largest professionally run archive of marketing promotional and advertising material in the world. In January 2007, Brian was awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Marketing
