MARY'S BIO: From the day she was rejected by the BBC because it didn’t employ women as receptionists. That was Ireland back in the 60's and receptions were manned by securtiy men - definitely no women. Mary Flavelle has been turning hurdles into opportunities, leading to her being named Ambassador for Women at SEEDA.
After a lengthy career in netball as player and coach, marketing trophy products to the local business and sporting community led to radio and TV appearances. Mary landed a job at Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce. Head-hunted by South East Economic Development Association (SEEDA), she was seconded to Enterpirse Gateway in Reading, and then nominated for the Ambassador award for the South East. ‘It’s not qualifications, you know, it’s being in the right place at the right time, and taking opportunities,' says Mary.
Mary’s business is networking in all forms, she has strong links with The High Commissioner of Malaysia, she has been a Director with OMEC - Malaysian Executive Council. She has continued her interest in local business breakfasts with the Keller Breakfast at the Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell. Her skills as an events organiser have led to her appointment as Chairman of the East Berkshire branch of Federation of Small Businesses.
It’s her passion to support women in business, which led to her appointment as Ambassador for Women, and has now given her the opportunity “to encourage young entrepreneurs, to mentor and to keep the government aware of the needs of women at work. Mary is Berkshire Head Judge for the Young Enterprise scheme and proud to be associated with it.
Whilst at the Chamber, she launched the women’s network SHE plc, and partners Sharon Connelly with Ladies who Latte. Mary has also stayed connected with radio, having been on Woman's Hour, Radio 4, Radio 5 and more recently presented her own networking show on Marlow FM, a regular visitor to Radio Berkshire appearing a number of times with Ann Diamond and Debbie McGee. Mary also spent 3 years with Henry Kelly as his weekly newspaper reviewer.
